One year on the feast day of Saint Maurice, all the inhabitants of the village climbed up to the hermitage to attend a solemn mass held in the saint's honour. All of a sudden, just after the mass had started, they were interrupted by two hunters who weren't from thereabouts who began to make fun of the devotion of those living there. The hunters then decided to go with their dog to hunt a fine specimen of a Pyrenean chamois. They were climbing up the mountain when they saw a large, outstanding chamois, the head of which could be seen in the valley between the two mountain peaks. When they got to that place, the chamois had mysteriously disappeared and at that precise moment a flash of lightning struck down the two hunters and their dog, turning them into stone.
Nowadays, if you climb up to the top of the mountain or from the footpath which leads to Lake Amitges you can clearly see the figures of the two hunters and their dog.

GOIG DE SANT MAURICI

Amb devoció molt complida

i se us presenta més gent.

   Tot l'exèrcit sens espera
al vostre entorn se posà
perquè no's trobés manera
de poder-vos escapà:
victoriosos en la guerra
conquistàreu tot l'Orient,
i amb victoria de la terra
sortíreu gloriosamente

   Tant bon punt s'arribassen
davant de l'Emperador,
si era l'ordre que adoressen
d'un fals déu l'estàtua d'or:
respongueren els Tebeus
a tant malvat manament,
ells no tenien altres déus
que al mateix Omnipotent.

   Acabàreu vostra vida
en dolorosos treballs
puig moríreu de seguida
tot trepitjat de cavalls:
puig màrtir sou de la fe
de Jesús soldat valent,
de culpes verdadé
lograu-nos, penediment.

   L'emperador amb gran pena
amb gran sentiment i planys,
matar féu la part desena
de tots els vostres companys:
perderen tots ells la vida,
moriren alegrament,
més avui d'un goig sens mida
disfruten eternamente

   Els miracles que heu obrat
no's podrien pas comptar,
al malalt n'haveu curat,
al tullit feu caminar:
pluja i sol si'es necessita,
concediu ben promptament,
quan tot Espot vos visita,
mostrant-vos agraiment.
